Nesting Alert: Dikkops are breeding in Cola and Myoli!
Shh... Tiny Dikkops on the Way!
It's that time of year again!
We're thrilled to confirm that the Spotted Thick-knee (or Dikkop) breeding season is officially underway here!
Nests have been spotted on several local verges and in gardens around the area.
Please help us protect the next generation:
- The nest: Usually just a scrape in the ground, often with a few pebbles or dry grass blades.
- The chicks: Tiny, fluffy, and incredibly well-camouflaged.
- Incubation is around 25-27 days.
Safety for all and some fun facts about these amazing birds:
- Keep your distance: Dikkops are ground-nesting and easily stressed.
- Control your dogs: Dogs must be kept on a lead near any known or suspected nesting sites.
- Parents' can put on a "broken-wing display" as a distraction tactic, this usually means the nest is very close.
- Please watch where you walk: Be especially careful on verges, open fields, or gravel areas where they often nest.
- DO NOT touch the eggs or chicks.
Let's work together to make sure this is a successful breeding season for our fascinating local wildlife.
